Reviews May 4th, 2005

Welcome to our new look for the reviews. We will still have some longer reviews, but instead of not having reviews posted due to conflicting schedules, we are going to try out this new shorter version to at least post some reviews each week.
Here is the key for what you are seeing:

= Not worth the paper it's printed on
= It is an OK book, not the greatest
= It is a decent book- Worth picking up
= Better than most books out there- Worth a second read
= This is what all books should aspire to be

ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #639
Publisher: DC Comics
Writer: Judd Winick
Art: Ian Churchill and Norm Rapmund

Part 2 of a 3 part ho hum story. At least there is only one part to go.

BATGIRL #63
Publisher: DC Comics
Writer: Andersen Gabrych
Art: Alé Garza, Jesse Delperdang and Dustin Nguyen (cover)

I like that Batgirl has somewhat come out from under the shadow of the bat. Her tenure in Bludhaven should prove interesting.

BATMAN #639
Publisher: DC Comics
Writer: Judd Winick
Art: Doug Mahnke, Tom Nguyen and Matt Wagner (cover)

Still a solid story even though I'm not overly fond of the latest revival.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #5
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Writer: Ed Brubaker
Art: Steve Epting and Michael Lark

Still going strong with the promise of a big reveal next issue. I wonder who really shot the Red Skull.

CITY OF TOMORROW #1 (Of 6)
Publisher: Wildstorm
Writer: Howard Chaykin
Art: Howard Chaykin

Off to an interesting start- Chaykin generally makes for an interesting read.

DAREDEVIL #72
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Art: Alex Maleev

I think I am beginning to suffer from too much Bendis each month, what's he writing 30 or so titles a month now?

DAY OF VENGEANCE #1 (Of 6)
Publisher: DC Comics
Writer: Bill Willingham
Art: Justiniano, Walden Wong and Walter Simonson (cover)

DOOM PATROL #11
Publisher: DC Comics
Writer: John Byrne
Art: John Byrne and Doug Hazlewood

FANTASTIC FOUR FOES #4 (Of 6)
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Art: Cliff Rathburn and Jim Cheung (cover)

INVINCIBLE #0
Publisher: Image Comics
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Art: Ryan Ottley & Bill Crabtree

50 Cents people- and it catches you up to the current story, how can you go wrong?

KARNEY #1 (Of 4)
Publisher: IDW
Writer: Bryan Johnson
Art: Walter Flannigan

I really don't know what to make of this book. It's a solid effort on a story involving regular folk and those cute little "Karneys", perhaps as the story moves along it will come together.

LEGEND #3 (Of 4)
Publisher: Wildstorm
Writer: Howard Chaykin
Art: Russ Heath

2nd Chaykin book this week, great story based on the novel Gladiator by Philip Wylie. It is the story of an average guy with powers beyond normal people growing up and having to deal with the reactions of those around him and him own. Great art by Russ Heath of Sgt. Rock fame.

LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #5
Publisher: DC Comics Writer: Mark Waid
Art: Barry Kitson and Art Thibert

LOST AT SEA GN
Publisher: ONI Press
Writer: Bryan Lee O'Malley
Art: Bryan Lee O'Malley

The story of an 18 year old girl who has lost her own identity. A random ride home with class mates helps her rediscover who she is and realize that we are all messed up in one way or another. Recommended!

NEW AVENGERS #5
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Writer: Briuan Michael Bendis
Art: David Finch and Danny Miki

Does the Savage Land have quicksand? That's what this story feels like it's trying to run through.

RED SONJA #0
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Writers: Michael Avon Oeming and Mike Carey
Art: Mel Rubi

25 cent introduction to a title that seems to have a lot of promise.

SLEEPER SEASON TWO #11 (Of 12)
Publisher: DC Comics
Writer: Ed Brubaker
Art: Sean Phillips

Just when I thought I had lost my enthusiasm for this title, a nice twist and promise for a strong finish.

SOLO #4
Publisher: DC Comics
Writer: Howard Chaykin
Art: Howard Chaykin

I swear this is the last Chaykin title this week. I really enjoy the SOLO series, while some of the creators stories may fall flat, it's nice to let them stretch their legs- Next issue Darwyn Cooke.

SUPERMAN BATMAN #19
Publisher: DC Comics
Writer: Jeph Loeb
Art: Ian Churchill and Norm Rapmund

Setting up Supergirl for her own series in the coming months, I'm not sure if I like the idea of springboarding from this title, not that its a bad idea, but why not give the boost with big guest stars in her first issue?

SUPREME POWER #16 (MR)
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Writer: J. Michael Stracznski
Art: Gary Frank and Jonathan Sibal

Always a strong title, the stories take a long time to unfold, but the payback is some of the richest characterization in a book today. This will switch to the Marvel Knights impring after issue 18, it will be interesting to see what changes, if any take place.

ULTIMATE SECRET #2 (Of 4)
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Writer: Warren Ellis
Art: Ateve McNiven and Mark Morales

I suppose I should like this book more but for some reason it leaves me flat, it could be the decade or so between issues or something.

UNLIKELY GN
Publisher: Top Shelf
Writer: Jeffrey Brown
Art: Jeffrey Brown

This book just draws you in, I'm not sure if it's the personal nature combined with the rough illistration style, but you can't help be drawn into this story of the author's first real girlfriend. This book deals with mature subject matter so I would not recommend it to kids, but I would to everyone else.

WONDER WOMAN #215
Publisher: DC Comics
Writer: Greg Rucka
Art: Rags Morales, Michael Bair and J.G. Jones (cover)

Gearing up for a big battle in Hades. A blind Wonder Woman is tougher than when she could see.

X-MEN PHOENIX ENDSONG #5 (Of 5)
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Writer: Greg Pak
Art: Greg Land

The title says "EndSong", but the ending was kind of open...
